People often do not consider their chimneys and fireplaces outside of the times when they are actively using them. However, there are issues that may require a chimney repair service. Unseen issues can get worse over time and cause fires in homes. This video will explain some chimney issues homeowners need to be wary of.
The first problem is obstruction. Just like your gutters, you need to make sure there isn’t debris blocking the chimney opening. Bird nests, leaves, branches, and excessive soot can clog the chimney. If the chimney is clogged, toxic fumes and smoke from the fireplace will get into the home and put the residents in danger.
Creosote is a mixture of tar and soot. It’s deposited in the lining of the chimney and needs to be cleaned regularly to avoid a buildup. Creosote is flammable, so it can cause a catastrophe if it isn’t properly removed.
There may be issues with the masonry of the chimney, too. It’s a good idea to work with a mason to check the bricks, stones, and mortar holding the chimney together. If there is enough water damage, a chimney can collapse entirely. Bricks will damage the home and can roll off the roof, hurting passersby.
